Volunteer Opportunities for Individuals
-
Hotline Volunteers support the Center’s 24-hour crisis hotline during non-office hours. The hotline is answered in the office during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 8 am-5 pm). During non-office hours (weekdays 5pm-8 am, weekends, and holidays) the hotline is call forwarded and staffed by volunteers. As a hotline volunteer, you can volunteer from the comfort of your own home while providing a vital service to the community and to the Center. Hotline volunteers screen and assess calls, relay messages, provide information and referral to callers, and connect victims with the on-call crisis advocate. Hotline volunteer shifts range from 4 to 15-hour time slots. Hotline volunteers may choose to do 1 shift per month, multiple shifts, or the same shift every week.
- Volunteer assignments at Bits & Pieces Thrift Store include: receive and process donations; sort donations; hang clothing; create merchandise displays; prepare the store for opening and closing; assist with inventory rotation; and cashier.
- Volunteers support the agency by providing direct assistance to clients during regular office hours. Services provided by volunteers include: assisting with client intakes, answering the hotline, assisting with client transportation, and providing information and referral services. Training is required and provided by the Center.
- The agency utilizes volunteers to support administrative functions such as making copies, compiling intake packets and safety booklets, receptionist duties, data entry, and performing routine computer maintenance.
- Volunteers are always needed to assist with facility maintenance and other projects such as small building jobs, painting projects, holiday and other giving drives, picking up and delivering supplies, lawn maintenance, and landscaping projects.
Volunteer Opportunities for Groups
-
Groups may also help collect items that the Family Crisis Center has an ongoing need for, including:
- Underwear and socks for women and children of all ages and sizes. We are also in need of twin bed sheets and toiletries.
- Non-perishable food donations to the Center’s Rainbow Room Food Pantry for clients who periodically do not have resources to cover food cost for the entire month.
-
Groups are particularly helpful in conducting drives for annual events such as: Thanksgiving Meal, Christmas Holiday Giving, and others.
These drives are conducted with the goal of collecting either a large amount of a single item or multiple items. The following are some examples of fundraising for these events:
- Thanksgiving meal groups may collect only cans of corn or green beans. OR
- Thanksgiving meal groups may collect a variety of food items to be distributed.
- Christmas Holiday Giving groups may decide to collect all footballs or dolls or any specific toy for all ages. OR
- Christmas Holiday Giving groups may decide to collect a variety of toys appropriate for all ages. OR
- Christmas Holiday Giving groups may decide to adopt several families, and we provide all information on ages, gender and their wish list.
- Both Thanksgiving and Christmas program welcome gift cards.
These are just examples – please contact the Community Partnership & Education Director to find out specific needs each year for collections.
- Volunteer groups are also needed and welcome to participate in any of the above listed volunteer opportunities for individuals.
- Fundraising Volunteers work with the Fundraising Manager and administrative staff to ensure that aspects of the Center’s special events and other fundraising efforts are accomplished as effectively and efficiently as possible. Fundraising volunteers assist with the many aspects of fundraising including but not limited to duties such as process bulk mailings, stuff invitations, staff information booths, prepare participant snacks and goodie bags, distribute flyers, serve on planning committees, staff registration tables, and set up for and/or tear down events.
